Negotiations Under Fire as Zelensky and Trump Plan Crucial Florida Meeting

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed an upcoming meeting with US President Donald Trump in Florida, highlighting renewed diplomatic efforts to bring Russia’s ongoing war closer to an end.

These developments unfold as Russia continues air strikes across Ukraine, with explosions reported in Kyiv and deadly attacks in Kharkiv, underscoring the conflict’s persistent human cost.

Zelensky has said the Florida talks will concentrate on a US-brokered peace plan, along with separate discussions on security guarantees and economic arrangements for Ukraine.

A key proposal involves creating a demilitarised zone in eastern Ukraine, where both Russian and Ukrainian forces would agree to withdraw troops from contested areas.

Ukraine has suggested pulling its forces back by as much as 40 kilometres in parts of Donbas, but only if Russia makes an equivalent withdrawal from occupied territories.

Russia currently controls most of the Donetsk region and nearly all of Luhansk, and Kremlin officials have criticised the US proposal as incompatible with their own negotiations.

Senior Russian leaders have warned that Ukraine must fully withdraw from Donbas or face continued military action, rejecting compromises over territorial control.

Trump has said he expects talks with both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin to proceed positively, while emphasising his authority over approving any agreement.

Zelensky has remained cautiously optimistic, stating that revised proposals now include strong US and European security guarantees inspired by Nato’s collective defence principle.
